Would-Be King

about

A: Probably nearest and dearest for me of this bunch, this was one of the first instrumentals I wrote top to bottom that felt somehow inappropriate for our old band. It was more deliberate and denser, with some interesting harmonic moves - definitely something I wanted to be dynamic. Also my first time writing alone, probably on Garageband, just having fun jamming on some drum loops and really composing for the first time.

D: I wrote this considering the commonality of the depowered demigod/god son trope across world stories: Jesus, Hercules, occasionally Clark Kent etc. It's Thor's Gethsemane, his Redemption Song.

lyrics

When I confess I need you, will you take me back?
I can't remember color, my sun rise is pitch black
Without you there's no steel in me
No stone
No strength left in my bones
But with you here

I would be king
I would be champion
I'd be the warrior god of the pantheon
With my hands I would tear the stars
From the heavens above me...
If you loved me

I think I hear my hammer callin me
I'm workin just to prove I'm worthy of
The mantle befallen me
I can't speak the lightning now
I'm cut off from the storm
Cast an eye upon your child
And see what I've become
